Addu City, Maldives – The Addu City Hithadhoo Magistrate Court has sentenced a man for sexually abusing a minor to imprisonment for 10 years.

In 2015, a man (20) sexually assaulted a 14 year old teenage girl. The suspect denies committing a crime. The minor and adult were in a relationship according to the minor. The man alleges that he was invited by the minor to her home.

Police arrested the man at the minor’s home.

The verdict by Hithadhoo Court Magistrate Rafeeuddin Ahmed states that sexual offences were proven by the minor’s admission and the statement by the man in the investigation stages are sufficient to indicate a confession.

The man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 14 September 2021, 6 years past the date of the crime.

This court sentence comes at a time with an increasing number of reported child sexual abuse cases in the Southern region of Maldives.
