Malé, Maldives – Bangladeshi migrant worker Shah Alom Mia (29), common name Salim, plead guilty to the murder of local businessman Mahmood Abu Bakr (57) at the Criminal Court today.

Speaking at today’s hearing via a translator, Salim confessed to the murder stating that he was influenced by satan to commit the crime. Salim also apologized for his crime.

Salim’s defence has requested a fast track plea agreement as the guilty plea entered by the defendant was voluntary and not the result of any force, threats or any form of coercion.

The state however requested an evidence based trial since this was a murder case.

Presiding Judge Ahmed Shakeel supported the defence’s appeal and scheduled to fast track the judgement to be announced at 09:30 on 26 January 2021.

The victim’s heirs have requested the death penalty.
