Malé, Maldives – The principal government hospital in the Maldives, IGMH, has decided to stop all general surgeries starting Saturday due to the escalating pandemic situation in the Maldives.

The hospital has not announced a date of resumption of services temporarily halted due to the Omicron based fourth wave.

IGMH has planned to downgrade multiple services in order to provide 24 hour emergency services.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has cautioned the nation as Maldives is set to enter a fourth wave larger than any faced before.

The authorities are also bracing for impact as health experts forecast an impending Omicron related Covid-19 wave to peak towards the end of January or beginning of February. Authorities warn that the Omicron cases will surpass the Delta variant.

Daily positive cases have surpassed the 2,000 mark with three fatalities recorded thus far today.
