STELCO powers Hulhulé through Greater Male’ Interconnection Grid

Malé, Maldives – State-owned utility company, STELCO revealed on Sunday that the company has started powering Hulhulé through the Greater Male’ Interconnection Grid.

STELCO informs that the company has started providing electricity to Hulhulé where the Velana International Airport is located using the Interconnection Grid on Friday.

The electricity network was connected to Hulhulé under an agreement with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on 6 January 2021.

STELCO has previously stated that this project will likely solve all the pollution faced by the residents of Male’ city and will also meet the demands of the city.

The Greater Malé Interconnection Grid project commenced in 2016 to provide electricity to the greater Malé area through an interconnected network.

The USD 79 million project initiated by STELCO in Hulhumale’ is contracted to Dongfang Electric International Corporation. STELCO aims to assure electricity coverage for the next 10 to 20 years, upon completion of the project. The project is funded by a loan arranged from the Exim Bank of China.
