Malé, Maldives – Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has described the opposition leader and former President Yameen Abul Qayyoom led “India Out” campaign to be damaging to Maldivians and has urged PPM members not to participate.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is the opposition party currently spearheaded by Yameen.

Nasheed’s comments regarding the campaign were made via a Tweet he sent out on Friday morning, in which he said that, “the activities being carried out against India are not supported by the people, and are damaging to Maldivians. I very respectfully ask of PPM members to not participate in activities against other countries.”

This is not the first time Nasheed has made such remarks about the campaign. He expressed similar sentiments earlier and criticised the campaign heavily, with MDP even submitting a bill against the campaign to the Parliament.

The India Out campaign is a physical and online campaign against Indian army presence in the Maldives, which is participated by other parties of the opposition coalition as well.
