Malé, Maldives – World Health Organization (WHO) has donated a Gene Sequencing Machine to the Maldives.

The Machine was received by the Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, on behalf of the Maldivian government.

Prior to this gene sequencing in the Maldives was done by sending samples abroad. However, with this new addition to the country’s health system, the time and money spent on carrying out genome sequencing is expected to decrease significantly and aid in the diagnosis of new Covid-19 variants.

“Building in-country sequencing capacity will help not just with COVID-19, but also other dangerous diseases such as Influenza, Measles, etc,” said WHO in a two-part thread posted on Twitter.
