PGO appeals release of suspect arrested for sexual abuse of multiple children

Malé, Maldives – Prosecutor General’s Office has decided to appeal the release of a man arrested for the sexual abuse of six minors under his care.

The 55-year-old Maldivian man initially remanded to 30 days in custody was released with conditions by the Criminal Court on Monday.

PGO has decided to appeal the Criminal Court decision at the Maldives High Court on Wednesday.

Reports suggest that the man is a businessman with close political ties.

The suspect has allegedly sexually abused multiple children in his family spanning over years. He is also accused of blackmailing the minors with photographs.

Authorities have released no further information on the case to protect the rights of the child victims.
