Malé, Maldives – “India Out” slogan has been graffitied on the walls of the High Commission of India in the Maldives on Wednesday.

This comes during a spree of vandalism attacks on various buildings including the private residences of the Minister of Defence Mariya Didi and the leader of Repulican Party Qasim Ibrahim.

An arrest was made yesterday regarding vandalism under the “India Out” campaign. Police arrested Abdul Ghaffar Abdul Ghafoor (34), Ma. Leggi with a court warrant.

In April 2022, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih gazetted a decree outlawing the “India Out” campaign after the opposition lead campaign to remove the Indian military from the Maldives was deemed a threat to national security by the National Security Council.

The President’s decision has been criticized by some stating that it is against article 27 of the Maldives Constitution ensuring the freedom of expression.
