Malé, Maldives – Chair of the Parliament Foreign Relations Committee MP Ibrahim Shareef stated on Monday that the government of Maldives has initiated the process to establish an embassy in Washington DC.

The Foreign Relations Chair confirmed this at a committee meeting held today to debate the appointment of Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as Ambassador of the Maldives to the US. Inquiries were made regarding the appointment of a separate ambassador to the US while presently the role is filled by Thilzeema Hussain who is also Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations based in New York.

Parliamentarians questioned the financial feasibility of establishing an embassy in a new city amid global economic instability.

Foreign Affairs committee has scheduled a meeting with the Foreign Ministry to further discuss the financial details.
