Malé, Maldives – Maldives Meteorological Service on Sunday released an alert forecasting storm swell surges for 15 atolls from Haa Alifu to Thaa atoll.

The atolls can expect swell surges and heavy rains from 14:00 to 18:00 today. Met Office released a white alert for the same atolls predicting heavy rains and thunderstorms with gusts of winds 45mph.

While Met Office has released weather warnings for today, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday updated that 34 islands were hit by storm surges in the past 48 hours with 451 homes rendered uninhabitable.

NDMA is working closely with the rescue department of Maldives National Defence Force and local councils to provide assistance to affected islanders. The authorities are providing temporary shelter to four families from GDh. Madaveli and one family from Addu City and Th. Thimarafushi.

Infrastructure projects and agricultural islands were also hit during the recent storm surges, with Addu Hankede bridge construction suffering irrecoverable damages and farmers reporting millions in loss across the atolls. Locals have also disconnected the Madaveli-Hoadedhoo causeway in an effort to mitigate the swell surges.
