Malé, Maldives – Criminal Court of Maldives on Thursday sentenced the grandfather and great-grandfather who sexually assaulted a 2-year-old to 25 years in prison.
The sentence is the highest possible sentence to be levied on a convict for the crime.
The prosecution charged Ibrahim Didi (62) and Hassan Moosa Didi (82) from GA. Kanduhulhudhoo of sexual offences against a child in their family. Criminal Court found the two suspects guilty of continued sexual assault against the victim from witness accounts.
The court reduced their sentences for time spent in remand resulting in 22 years and 10 months remainder.
The case churned public outcry after it was reported that three men, the father, grandfather and great-grandfather sexually assaulted a 2-year-old on 15 January 2020. The case was initially reported by the toddler’s maternal aunt after discovering bruising in her private parts.
Further investigations revealed that the father did not participate in the sexual assault but facilitated it by withholding the child from her maternal family who were willing to take care of her while the toddler’s mother was receiving drug rehabilitation treatment in the capital city Malé.
