Maldivian driving license to be recognized in Malaysia

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – Maldives and Malaysia has signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement for domestic driving licenses to be effective from September 12, 2022 onward.

The Mutual Recognition Agreement was signed by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula on behalf of Maldives and Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong on behalf of Malaysia in a ceremony held today in Malaysia.

The first bilateral Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) that Malaysia has with a foreign country will allow drivers holding licenses of both countries to drive motor vehicles in each other’s country with the driving licenses issued by the respective countries.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Maldivian Minister for Transport Aishath Nahula highlighted that this would ease mobility for Maldivians living in Malaysia and vice versa. She added that this symbolizes the strength of the relationship between the two nations.

Malaysian Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong stated that this MRA will facilitate all citizens of both countries who can then ultimately contribute to the development of the social and economic sectors of both Malaysia and the Maldives.
