Yoga Day Violence: Two Sheikhs awarded 10 days to appoint legal help

Malé, Maldives – Two local Sheikhs Adam Nishan and Fazloon Mohamed, who are charged in relation to the violence that broke out during the International Yoga Day event held in Malé, have been awarded 10 days to appoint their defence team.

The Criminal Court made the decision today upon the pair’s request with regards to the terrorism charges against them. Both Fazloon and Nishan were specifically charged with encouraging an act of terrorism for their alleged participation in the yoga day riot that took place during the event held on 21st June at Galolhu Stadium in Malé.

Police arrested 21 individuals for inciting violence at the International Yoga Day event held in the early hours of 21 June 2022. The event was attended by high-profile figures including top government figures, ambassadors and UN representatives.
