Sheikh Nishan released from custody

Sheikh Nishan, who was arrested in connection to Yoga day attack

Malé, Maldives – Sheikh Adam Nishan, who was arrested on World Yoga Day, in connection with the violence that took place against yoga, has been ordered by the Criminal Court to be released from custody.

Following a month long stay in remand, he was ordered by the court to be released today on conditions which have not been disclosed.

Along with Shiekh Nishan, was also Sheikh Fazloon who was among the arrested in connection with the same event. However, Sheikh Fazloon was released from remand earlier, with his preaching license suspended. Sheikh Nishan’s preaching license has also been suspended.

Police arrested 21 individuals for inciting violence at the International Yoga Day event held in the early hours of 21 June 2022. The event was attended by high-profile figures including top government figures, ambassadors and UN representatives.
