Scholars appeal arrest for Yoga Day violence at High Court

Male’, Maldives – Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan, arrested in connection to the violence at the event to celebrate international Yoga Day have appealed their arrest at the Maldives High Court.

The High Court has not made a decision regarding accepting the case.

The preaching licenses of Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan were also suspended following their arrests on 22 June 2022. 

Criminal Court has remanded the two religious scholars to remand in custody.

Police stated that the two popular clerics were arrested for inciting violence at the International Yoga Day event held in the early hours of 21 June 2022. The event was attended by high-profile figures including top government figures, ambassadors and UN representatives.
