Malé, Maldives – One of the 12 people arrested with drugs in an apartment in the Malé City on Thursday night is a Drug Enforcement Department police officer.
Police arrested 12 people in a drug operation conducted in Malé and Hulhumalé last Thursday night. They were four women and eight men. All of them were arrested while partying in an apartment in Malé city.
Local media reports state that the arrested persons include a police officer from the Drug Enforcement Department and that he was in charge of keeping stock of the drugs seized by the police.
The policeman was arrested and taken to the Criminal Court for an extension of his remand. However, the court did not release his remand order as his remand hearing was kept secret at the request of the police.
Police are charging some of the arrested with drug possession and trafficking. The Criminal Court remanded them in custody for various periods.
The court orders show that drugs were found in the apartment, but it is not known whether enough drugs were found to meet trafficking standards.
