Malé, Maldives – Former Chairman of Maldives Elections Commission and current MD of State Electric Company (STELCO), Ahmed Shareef has joined Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Shareef reportedly signed to MDP last week.
Shareef, who served as the Election Commission Chairman, was a close to former President Abdullah Yameen. However, since the defeat of President Yameen in the last presidential election, various supporters of President Yameen have made accusations against Shareef of tempering with the elections.
The opposition PPM coalition had accused Shareef of rigging the last presidential election.
Prior to his appointment to Elections Commission, Shareef had served as Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
