AFCONS fire: 76 people burned, 6 in serious condition

Gulhifalhu, Maldives – 76 people have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in the accommodation block of the Thilamalé bridge workers.

The fire incident took place at a labour camp hired by AFCONS Infrastructure from HDC at Gulhifalhu Island late Thursday night.

Maldives Police Service had revealed that out of the 76 people who were taken to hospital, six were in critical condition after being burned in a fire last night.

Police said 76 people who sustained various injuries in the fire are being treated at Treetop Hospital and IGMH. Of these, 63 are undergoing treatment at Treetop Hospital and 13 at IGMH. Six of them are in critical condition, police said.

The incident was reported at 12:36 pm, police said. Police are investigating the incident.

The fire was extinguished by MNDF FRS firefighters who rushed to the scene. The fire was extinguished by FRS firefighters at 01:52 hrs. The accommodation block was completely burnt down in the fire.

The accommodation block is reported to have a population of 465 people.

The cause of the fire is still unclear and it is being investigated by the relevant authorities, AFCONS said in a statement.
