Malé, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has been criticised for the arrest of an elderly woman during a protest by the opposition in Malé City yesterday.

Videos circulating on social media show police officers using force to catch an elderly woman running away and two policemen grab her and seize a national flag. The woman was seen resisting at first but the police were seen pulling her away.

Police have been widely criticised by the public after the video went viral on social media platforms.

The commissioner tweeted that he would investigate the ongoing fires in the country and the arrest of an elderly woman during last night’s protest.

Police said they would investigate the arrest of the elderly woman following public criticism.

Imthiyaz Fahumee, MDP MP for Maafannu North, questioned why an elderly woman should be arrested for expressing her opinion.

The Criminal Court on December 25 sentenced former President Abdullah Yameen to 11 years in prison. The opposition has been protesting every night since December 25th.
