Former President Nasheed’s close alliance’s new party, The Democrats submitted to register party with 3,500 signatures.

Elections Commission has granted The Democrats’ to register party last week. Minimum of 3,500 signatures are needed to register as a political party in Maldives.

Tension between President Solih and former President and President of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed has been growing for over three years. In this period, supporters of Nasheed has been criticizing Solih Administration heavily.

A new party was formed after MDP ousted MP for Henveiru Medhu, Ali Azim for going against MDP’s three-line whip. 12 members supporting President Nasheed immediately resigned after, while Nasheed is still in MDP.
