The Democrats, led by former President Mohammed Nasheed, have been registered by the Election Commission.

Election Commission Vice-President Ismail Habeeb said that as the procedure required to register a political party has been completed by The Democrats, the party has been approved for inclusion in the register of political parties.

The decision was taken at the commission’s general meeting yesterday, unanimously.

The party held a meeting required under the Political Parties Act to form the party and filed for registration on last Sunday.

Former President Mohammed Nasheed is scheduled to sign up for The Democrats on Thursday evening.

Nasheed’s signing ceremony will be held at 8:30 pm on Thursday at Artificial Beach.

Nasheed, who is involved in party activities, said the Democrats were the major faction of the MDP. The new party is 80 percent of the MDP, he said. So far, the party has submitted 3,000 membership forms to the Election Commission.

Nasheed left the MDP when his close associates started working to form a party called The Democrats. Nasheed, however, has not yet signed up for the Democrats.

The Democrats have announced that they will nominate a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The party is also holding a series of discussions with the opposition PPM-PNC to work together.
