Malé, Maldives — A man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for sexually abusing a minor that is related to him.

The Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem tweeted on Tuesday revealing that a man who had molested a minor in Raa Atoll four years ago has been successfully convicted by the Criminal Court.

The man was declared guilty after the Court gained enough evidence from the DNA, victim’s statement and from the medical & social assessment reports.

The PG, Shameem also tweeted expressing his feelings regarding the case saying that he is “particularly proud of the contact PGO prosecutors and Victim Support Unit had with the victim and her family.”

He further mentioned that the victim was “informed promptly of the conviction and updated regularly during the long trial too.” PG Shaheem said that he hopes for every such case to be done in a similar manner.

Over the past years, the country has reported multiple sexual abuse cases -mostly of minors-, grooming and rape cases as well. However, as the government failed to arrest and convict majority of these offenders, it has outraged the public awaking protests against sexual abuse in the country.

Nevertheless, if any such incident happens, all residents are encouraged to report the cases to the police’s Family and Child Protection Wing at +960 3000600 or the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services at 1412. The incumbent government of Maldives has made several promises saying that they will protect and support the rights of children and women.
