Government is trying to postpone council elections: Adam Shareef

Male’, Maldives – MP of Maduvvari Constitueny Adam Shareef said that the government is trying to further delay the local council elections by showing excuses.

MP Adam Shareef said this following remarks from the President of the Election Commission Ahmed Shareef, in which he stated that candidates must be given the opportunity to campaign and that if this is not done so, it may lead to further delay of the elections through court. He said that the government is making efforts to postpone the election by showing excuses rather than having a fair and just election where everyone is given equal opportunities.

The opposition, PPM and PNC recently met with the Director General of Health Protection Agency Maimoona Aboobakuru as they were not able to go into other atolls for their campaign.

Vice President of PNC Ibrahim Shujau said post the meeting with DG Maimoona that under the Constitution of the Maldives, the opposition members must also have the equal opportunity to go to other atolls for their campaign without having to quarantine, if the MDP members were allowed to do so.

Shujau also said that they have sent a letter to HPA as they require approval from HPA to go into other attols. He also noted that a reply is expected within this week.
