Malé, Maldives – The Civil Court of Maldives granted a stay order to temporarily cease the jurisdictional takeover of Hulhumalé by Malé City Council.

The stay order directs stops all institutions from reinforcing the city council’s decree and from all actions which may disrupt HDC operations in Hulhumalé.

On 8 December 2021, Malé City Council cancelled the registration granting Housing Development Corporation (HDC) authority over Hulhumalé and reclaimed the artificial city under the city council’s jurisdiction.

HDC appealed the case at the Maldives Civil Court requesting a stay order against the Malé City Council decision. HDC states that the city council’s decision is unlawful and will obstruct multiple projects undertaken by the company. The company also states that the dissolving of the registrations will disrupt loans taken by the company causing irreparable damages.
