Malé, Maldives – The President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly and Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and Minister of Defence Mariya Didi have departed on a campaign trip to Sh. Komandoo.
The cabinet ministers representing the ruling party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) departed to Komandoo today ahead of the bi-election for the Komandoo constituency seat following the passing of the Komandoo MP Hussain Waheed.
The party is expected to visit 3 islands of the Komandoo constituency, Komandoo, Maroshi and Fokaidoo.
The ministers are joined by parliamentarians representing MDP.
The President kickstarted the election campaign for the MDP representative Mohamed Rasheed stating that the governing party will provide solutions for the issues faces by the constituency. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is also set to travel to Komandoo tomorrow.
In addition to the ruling party, the opposition is also expected to embark on a campaign trip to the islands. The oppositon leader and former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is set to depart to Sh. Komandoo tomorrow.
During his trip, he will campaign to support the opposition Progressive Party representative for the Komandoo bi-election Moosa Fathuhy.
The opposition leader President Yameen will be accompanied by former running mate Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Malé Mayor Mohamed Muizzu.
Three political party representatives are contesting in this election. Newly formed Maldives National Party (MNP) are also contesting with Komandoo native Abdul Hannan Idris. The party is also running a strong campaign in the islands.
In the most recent election for the Komandoo constituency, senior member of MDP, the late Hussain Waheed won the seat with majority votes.
The constituency has 3,316 eligible voters and the election date is set for 5 February 2022.
