President pledges swift action following Yoga Day event attack

Malé, Maldives – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the attack at the Yoga Day event at the national stadium earlier this morning is a serious threat and swift action would be taken against perpetrators.

President has stated this following an attack on the international Yoga Day event held jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Indian High Commission earlier today.

Protestors holding flags had broken past the lines of police monitoring the event earlier today entering the stadium causing major property damage and threatening the attendees.

The individuals were holding the same flags used in the protest following BJP member’s remarks against the Prophet Muhammad with the Islamic Shahada written in black on a white canvass. The opposition had also used the same flags at a recent event held at the carnival area.

Police used teargas and dispersed the protestors before the situation escalated out of control.

President Solih stated that the police are now investigating the case and swift action will be taken against those responsible.

The Malé City Council had earlier rejected to permit the event to be held at Rasfannu Beach amid backlash from some members of the public and a religious organization.
