Islamic Ministry suspends preaching licenses of two clerics arrested for Yoga Day violence

Malé, Maldives – Islamic Ministry of Maldives on Thursday suspended the preaching license for two religious scholars who were arrested in connection to the Yoga Day riots.

The preaching licenses of Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan were suspended following their arrests last night.

Criminal Court on Thursday remanded Sheikh Nishan to 7 days in prison while the court has not made a decision regarding Sheikh Fazloon.

Police stated that the two popular clerics were arrested for inciting violence at the International Yoga Day event held in the early hours of 21 June 2022. The event was attended by high-profile figures including top government figures, ambassadors and UN representatives.
