Yoga Day Violence: Scholars’ remand extended, 6 released

Male’, Maldives – The Criminal Court on Tuesday extended the remand for local clerics Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan with additional 16 days for Yoga Day violence.

Criminal Court has made this decision while the two scholars have appealed their arrest at the Maldives’ High Court.

The preaching licenses of Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan were also suspended following their arrests on 22 June 2022. 

Police released six individuals arrested during the Yoga Day violence from custody on Monday. The investigation continues despite their release. In addition to those released yesterday, one individual was released earlier on 22 June 2022, a day after arrest.

Police arrested 21 individuals for inciting violence at the International Yoga Day event held in the early hours of 21 June 2022. The event was attended by high-profile figures including top government figures, ambassadors and UN representatives.
