After signing up for The Democrats tonight, Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has vowed to tear down the current ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Nasheed left the MDP when his close associates started working to form a party called The Democrats. Nasheed, however, had not signed up for the Democrats till last night.

Speaking at the event held in Artificial Beach last night to officially sign up for The Democrats, Nasheed said the main objective of forming the MDP was to improve the situation of the people through strong principles and rules.

The differences between President Nasheed and the MDP leader, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, escalated after the bomb attack on President Nasheed.

Since then, the relationship between the two had deteriorated and President Nasheed has contested the MDP presidential primary against President Solih, who won the primary.

Speaking at last nights ralley, Nasheed said that he had to leave the MDP, because the party was moving away from the beliefs and rules he had accepted for so long. He said he had spent most of his life in injustice and worked to build an “honest and sincere” country.

Nasheed urged no one to abandon their philosophies and ideologies. “You are in the wrong place,” Nasheed said, referring to his “close friends” in the MDP.

Speaking at last nights rally, Nasheed urged his friends in the MDP to leave the party.

The Democrats have announced that they will nominate a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The party is also holding a series of discussions with the opposition PPM-PNC to work together.
